Rajasthan is one of the most important tourist destinations in India and south-east Asia. Its desert dotted with rugged forts and beautiful palaces, lakes, wildlife and bird sanctuaries, charming cities, fairs and festivals, and colourful culture form the most fascinating and unique basket of attractions for any tourist. Last year, Rajasthan received about 1.3 million foreign and 23 million domestic tourists. With an annual tourist arrival growth rate of over 12%, the future of tourism is very promising. Rajasthan needs 20,000 additional hotel rooms immediately to meet the demand.
The State has adopted an aggressive and comprehensive strategy to give further fillip to the tourism industry and enhance the tourism experience. This includes efforts towards strengthening of infrastructure, restoration of old monuments, and development of new tourism circuits and products. Most of these are being implemented with the involvement of the private sector.
As a result of all this, numerous opportunities have emerged for private investment:

  • Investment in the development of tourism units: A Hotel Policy has been announced that offers a number of incentives for setting up of hotel units. A land bank has also been developed for setting up hotels in various important cities.
  • Development of heritage buildings as tourism properties: The State Government is facilitating an arrangement wherein private heritage properties (forts, fortresses, palaces and havelis) can be taken up by investors in a joint venture or on management contract. The Government is in the process of identifying government properties of heritage value, which would be given out on lease arrangements.
  • Running properties of Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation on lease or in joint venture.
  • Ropeways: Specific locations have been identified (Udaipur, Ajmer, etc.) and Ropeways Act has been formulated to facilitate investment.
  • Amusement parks, Theme parks & Resorts
  • Adventure tourism products: River sports, hot air ballooning, desert sports, horse safari, aero-sports, etc.
  • Naturopathy, yoga and meditation centres

A package of incentives is also available for new tourism units under the Rajasthan Investment Promotion Scheme.
